What is the electricity?

¨The real sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination¨.

-Albert Einstein.

Electrical energy is energy derived from electric potencial energy or kinetic energy. When used loosely, electrical energy refers to energy that has been converted from electric potential energy. This energy is supplied by the combination of electric current and electric potencial that is delivered by an electrical circuit (e.g., provided by an electric power utility). At the point that this electric potential energy has been converted to another type of energy, it ceases to be electric potential energy. Thus, all electrical energy is potential energy before it is delivered to the end-use. Once converted from potential energy, electrical energy can always be called another type of energy (heat, light, motion, etc.).

What is the use of electric energy?

In everyday life it is very clear what electricity is for, but we can evaluate the following examples:

Urban lighting: Electricity management has massified light and allowed our cities today to be more and better lit than before.

Car ignition: Operates based on fuel burning (petrol), but to initiate that controlled reaction requires a spark that produces the electrical energy contained in the accumulator (battery).

Our own body: The human body also works with specific and controlled doses of electricity. Among neurons, for example, there are electrical exchanges; muscles are operated on the basis of controlled discharges that activate elastic cells.

Defibrillators in hospitals: In hospitals, a device called a defibrillator is used, which by controlled electric shocks allows to try to start a stopped heart again.

Electrolysis: This laboratory chemical process involves adding electricity to various reactions or substances to separate them into their integrative components.

The many power plants: Whether hydroelectric, wind, geothermal or burning fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas.

With the advancement of technology there is a more palpable example of the use of electric energy in different areas and «curious» aspects, since it would be impossible for us to stay «online» if we could not charge our mobile devices, which today forms part of our lives

What we would do if there was no electricity?

We are at a relentless risk of this happening at any time, things like a solar storm or some other similar phenomenon would leave the earth in the dark and suddenly for 3 days or more. We can live in the dark for a short period, we have means with which to deal with this situation, however, a total destruction of all the electricity networks of the world would occur and its solution take a long time to arrive, that is from that point we began to ask what would happen if we ran out of electricity and the consequences that this event would bring to our current lifestyle. Overnight we would be completely incommunicado, without cell phone, computer, laptops or tv, hospitals will collapse because they would not be able to keep up for too long the electricity generators, the economy will collapse by the uncertainty, we would go back to that time that we have seen on television and that sometimes even bores us to see. We are slaves to electronics and to think that the battery of the mobile is depleted and we have no way to charge it terrifies us, now imagine that scenario for weeks, months and possibly years, we are living an era where material is the main thing to feeling good about yourself, the constant development of technology drives us every day.

By running out of electrical power, it is possible that the planet was left not only in darkness because of the lack of light, but also of ideas thanks to our dependence on these electronic devices.

But not everything is so bad scenario, seeing now the positive side of what would happen if we ran out of electricity, we must also consider that we would appreciate and create many forgotten things over the years, such as sailing boats, the use of the farm animals for work, we will again transport ourselves in horses, we will use the fire if we need lighting at night, we will no longer be so materialistic, we will share again with family and friends personally without any apparatus electronic in between, in short we will return to the times of 1800 only with more knowledge and experience, if our ancestors were able to bring the nations forward during that time, we can do so as well.

Why we need the electricity?

-¨Science without religion this lame, and religion without science is blind¨. -Albert Einstein.

Today’s society is a very technological society that relies heavily on energy. Electricity as an energy source is essential for the proper functioning of a myriad of devices that make our lives much easier, from those used in hospitals (x-ray machines, respirators, incubators) to those used in the home (washing machine, kitchen, hairdryer, TV, radio, mp3). Thus, without electricity we would fall back to health and comfort levels before the time of the industrial revolution.
